A desktop PC offers much easier access to its components, many of which can be easily replaced or upgraded. You can also alter the performance specs of your desktop PC by changing out the processor for something more powerful, and altering the graphics card to something more capable. One of the most brilliant things about upgrading your desktop PC actually has nothing to do with replacing the internal components.

By altering the original case — adding bits, taking bits away, sticking things on, repainting, redesigning… you can have a totally unique-looking desktop PC which will make a real statement. There are really cool websites out there which will tell you how you can go about making modifications to your PC case, and guide you through the process — or at the very least give you some idea of the amount of work required to get your case from standard black to galaxy-level amazing.

And there are galleries on websites which show off some of the more spectacular modifications to have been crafted and created by PC users. But your creativity is your limit. Yes, you can. You can turn a dull-looking PC into something ultra-modern. The lights are quite easy to fit too. But there are many desktop PCs on the market which are much smaller and more compact than you might imagine. Desktop PCs are now much more aesthetically pleasing than they used to be, in terms of their size.

However, most computers survive five to eight years, depending on the upgrading components. Drain the computer of electricity Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery if possible. Hold down the power button for thirty seconds to drain any residual power from the laptop.

Without replacing the battery, plug the AC adapter back into the laptop. The PC hardware and monitor are, in most cases, built into one piece. One of the most common reasons for a slow computer is programs running in the background. Remove or disable any TSRs and startup programs that automatically start each time the computer boots.

Spoiler: Consumers noticed the difference. The category was gone almost before anyone noticed that it was fading. Meanwhile, PC makers realized that at least two groups of customers were willing to pay a premium for a PC: business buyers and gamers.

And so, as we shall see, OEMs began investing heavily in those two categories. Back in , Microsoft was just beginning to show off its touch-enabled Windows 7 PCs , but they were quickly overshadowed by the iPad launch. By , the category had solidified into a wide range of shape-shifting 2-in-1 devices.

Today, touchscreens are common on Windows laptops but nonexistent on Apple's MacBook lines. Conventional spinning disk media were all the rage in , with reviewers praising devices that offered fast RPM hard drives.

SSDs became an expensive option over the next few years and have dropped in price dramatically since, to the point where it's difficult today to find a portable PC with a conventional hard disk. Battery life is better. Back in , battery life benchmarks of hours were considered good, and real world performance was always less impressive.
